The main reason for wisdom teeth extraction is because of what is called impaction. When wisdom teeth cause impaction, it means that they are growing in at an angle which will cause them to impact their neighboring molars and throw the rest of the teeth out of alignment. This can be incredibly painful, and the impaction can cause infection and decay around the wisdom teeth and neighboring molars.

For this reason, the four wisdom teeth are often necessarily extracted in order to preserve oral health. The oral surgeon makes an incision in the gums, breaks apart the tooth, and extracts it piece by piece, stitching up the gums afterward. In most cases, the mouth fully heals within a week or two.
