Tooth Filling Cost

Every filling is different, and this means that every tooth filling cost will be different, too.

Price Factors

There are different kinds of fillings, and the different materials used are more or less expensive. For example, white fillings will be more expensive than the traditional silver fillings. White fillings require different equipment and more expertise, whilst silver fillings are fairly basic. Also, every cavity is a different size and shape depending upon the tooth and extent of decay. Because of this, the fillings will have to be larger or smaller, and naturally, the more material required, the more expensive the filling will be.

There are also some preparatory processes to larger fillings. Some need posts or pins placed in order to sustain the integrity of the filling. These will add to the cost. Some other items that will factor into every tooth filling cost are:

  • Where your dentist is located. For example, in a large city, a filling will be more expensive.
  • The experience and skill of your dentist.
  • Your insurance coverage.

Temporary Fillings

A temporary rather than permanent filling may be necessary for a number of reasons. If you are in an emergency or in a lot of pain, the dentist may temporarily fill the cavity before the appointment for the permanent filling to prevent excess tooth decay. Many times a dentist will also do a temporary filling if a root canal procedure is necessary; the filling will help to soothe the tooth nerve in preparation for the procedure.

It’s important to remember that a temporary filling is not meant to be permanent. Eventually, it will crack and deteriorate within the mouth, leaving the tooth exposed to decay and infection. If this happens, the damage to the tooth may even cause it to fail entirely and need removal. A temporary tooth filling cost is less than that of a permanent filling.

Types of Fillings

Silver Amalgam Fillings

These silver fillings are the most common and traditional type of filling, and so they are the cheapest. They also are known to last for many years, their only down side being that they are very apparent in the wearer’s mouth. Also, you may want to consider a different type of filling if you have any metal allergies.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings have the middle road on tooth filling cost, their advantage being that their color blends more naturally with the tooth. Composite fillings, however, are not nearly as durable or long-lasting as silver fillings.

Ceramic Fillings

Ceramics have the highest tooth filling cost, but the most benefits. They are more durable and sturdy than any other kind and can be colored to match your natural teeth.
