Permanent Dentures

If you have dentures, you have probably dealt with the fuss and hassle of different smelly adhesives and dentures that slip, slide, pop, and irritate. While you may not be able to grow a new set of natural teeth, there is a permanent solution. Denture implants are the latest innovation in world of tooth replacement. These permanent dentures eliminate the need for adhesives or clips because they are permanently rooted into your jawbone.

The Process

Getting fitted dentures takes numerous appointments and a good amount of research on your part. When you meet with your dentist, he will do a thorough examination of your mouth and jaw structure, which will allow him or her to sit down and discuss the denture options you are eligible for. Not all people can qualify for permanent dentures, as it requires a surgical procedure. But either way, your dentist will be able to help you find the best option for you.

If you don’t require any surgical reshaping or bone grafting, the dentist will take an impression of each jaw. He will use this to create a wax cast, which you will try for fitting, after which, with your approval, it will be made into the permanent denture cast. Remember, when you are fitting your dentures, be honest and straightforward with your dentist – these are going to be your permanent set of teeth, and they will be costing you, so you deserve a set that fits comfortably. Also remember that this entire process will take place over several appointments.

The Procedure

Aside from the dentures being fitted and formed, the dental implants that will serve as the denture anchors will need to be placed. In the typical procedure, four implants will be placed in each jaw. For implantation, the dentist will drill small pilot holes into the implantation areas. He or she will then insert each titanium screw implant, with the top protruding. This top will be where the denture “snaps” in, firmly anchoring the denture in place without slipping, sliding, or popping. The denture will also be removable for cleaning.

After the implants are placed, there will be a healing period of 2-6 months where the titanium will fuse to your jawbone, making the procedure entirely permanent. Then your full dentures can be placed and you can experience chewing, speaking, and smiling naturally again.
